Middle School

Grades 5-6

Welcome to 5th Grade!

We are so happy to have you this year. Here are some of the many things to look forward to:

English Language Arts: We read many different fiction and non-fiction texts throughout the year. Students will participate in “book tastings” to sample books they may want to read. We also get to hone in our writing skills as we practice essay writing.

Math: Happy Math Day! This year, we spend a lot of time becoming proficient with fractions and decimals in the 4 operations of math.

Social Studies: Time to take a trip through the past as we focus on American History from the Early Explorers to the Civil War. This year you will also learn about all the former presidents of the United States.

Science: Got a favorite field of science you like to study? This year you will have 3 fields of science to learn about: Physical Science, Earth Science, and Life Science. In Physical Science we spend time learning about matter and its states and movement. In Earth Science, we focus on the 4 spheres of Earth and learn how each one interacts and changes over time. In Life Science, we learn about plants as well as animals in their ecosystems.

Other things to look forward to this year include a visit to the Capital building, a visit from Discovery Gateway to do some hands-on science, a field trip to the aquarium to check out underwater ecosystems, Music programs, and so much more! We look forward to a great year!

We are SO excited to meet you all! At Athlos Academy, 6th grade is a time to prepare the mind to make real world connections to what is being taught in the classroom. Here is a little preview of what is going to be covered in your subjects this upcoming year.

In language arts, you will not only expand your vocabulary and improve your writing skills but will also learn to think critically while engaging in a variety of texts throughout the year! Be ready to participate in research papers, class debates, and reader’s theater.

In math, you are going to build on what you’ve learned in 5th grade. Be prepared to review fractions and decimals, learn about ratios, equations, and expressions. You will also be introduced to geometry and some statistics!

In science, you are going to learn about the structure of a molecule. You will also be learning all about space and the planets! Next, be ready to learn about ecosystem balances! You are going to have the chance to participate in several fun projects and labs in science class this year!

Lastly, in social studies, you are going to be learning about ancient civilizations including Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, etc. The Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Meso America will also be covered!

We know you are super excited for 6th grade! It is a time where you get a little more freedom and opportunity. With that opportunity comes responsibility! You will have many things to look forward to: lockers, school dances, student council, etc. We hope you are ready to make 6th grade your best year yet! You are going to love it here.
