Bullying Prevention Month and Red Ribbon Week

Announcement

Dear Athlos families,

The month of October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and the last week of October is Red Ribbon Week. To raise awareness in our school community, each week we will have a theme at school. Here are the themes for each week.

Week of October 5: Challenge Yourself and Others to Be Kind.

Make kindness go viral with an act of kindness and challenge friends and classmates to pay it forward with their acts of kindness. Parents can post stories of their child showing kindness on the Athlos Facebook page, teachers can email Miss Jessica (jwinward@athlosutah.org) stories of students showing kindness in their classrooms, and our student leaders can then give shoutouts to students over school announcements throughout the month of October.

Week of October 12: STAND UP for Others.

Be an UPSTANDER. When you see someone being bullied, be brave and STAND UP for them. If you don’t feel safe, get the help of an adult immediately. Remember that reporting is not tattling. Tattling is telling on someone in order to just get them in trouble. Reporting is getting help when you or someone you know is being hurt. Be part of the solution, not the problem.

(FALL BREAK – NO SCHOOL) Week of October 19: Start Conversations with Family and Friends.

Have conversations with family and friends about how you can each be part of the solution and put an end to bullying and cyberbullying.

Week of October 26: Red Ribbon Week.

Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the nation. This year’s theme is: Be happy. Be brave. Be drug-free. The theme is a call to action to speak out in support of healthy choices. It also serves as a reminder that we are all empowered with shaping the communities around us through positivity, bravery, and strength.

At school, students will engage in activities that promote a drug-free and healthy lifestyle. Please partner with us and discuss this message at home, at the dinner table, at family outings, and with friends and extended family. Let’s get smart about drugs and celebrate Red Ribbon Week together! This is your opportunity to get the ongoing conversation started.

  • 10/26 Monday – No School
  • 10/27 Tuesday – Too Bright for Drugs (students wear neon colors)
  • 10/28 Wednesday – Live Red! (students wear as much red as possible)
  • 10/29 Thursday – Head Away from Drugs (students wear a hat or crazy hairdo)
  • 10/30 Friday – Say Boo to Drugs (students wear Halloween costumes)

*Students are expected to wear the Athlos uniform if not participating*

If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Winward at jwinward@athlosutah.org.

Sincerely,

Athlos Academy of Utah
